The Cardinals have yet again reached the World Series, proving they deserve to be a part of the Postseason. They face one of their greatest rivals: the Boston Red Sox. Both teams have each won 11 World Series titles, and for both teams this is their third trip to the series in the last 10 years.
“We get WAY into watching the Series in my house. Everyone in my family bets on who they think will win, and we all stay up to watch the games. And I’m one of the only people in my family who says the Cardinals will win!” sophomore Lindsey Stucki said.
While tensions may run high during these games, the lighter side should still be remembered; the traditional bet between the city governors.
St. Louis Governor Jay Nixon has bet against Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick that the Cardinals will win the Series. They are holding some locally produced products on the line. If Nixon wins, he will receive a bowl of New England clam chowder, seltzers, and baked goods, all in locally famous companies in Massachusettes. If the Red Sox wins the series, Patrick will get four Cardinal crème sodas, a box of Bissengers chocolates and Italian pastries from the Hill.
Aside from the governors, the archbishops of each city are also placing bets on the outcome of the series. Archbishop O’Malley of Boston is betting Archbishop Carlson of St. Louis $100 of his own money that the Sox will win the series. The loser will donate the agreed-upon amount to a local Catholic charity.
While strong feelings are still held about the outcome of the series, the lighter side of the game should still be remembered.
“I really want to Cardinals to win, but mostly it is just fun to be a part of the World Series,” math teacher Kevin John said.
