The Longhorns made the 2013 homecoming game a night to remember with a 30-14 win over the Rockwood Summit Falcons. The win marks the end of a 23 game drought that began in 2011.
“This win is fantastic. Everybody has been waiting for so long and it just feels great to deliver,” senior Calvin Gorczyca said.
The team played a near-perfect game with a stellar defense that included three interceptions, four sacks and a forced fumble, while also limiting the Falcons to only six first downs and no third down conversions. West only incurred one penalty the entire game, as opposed to the five that were committed by Summit.
“We played really well and we limited our mistakes. I’m really happy for these guys,” Head Coach Jeff Duncan said.
The Longhorn offense was primed to perform in both the passing and running attacks. Junior quarterback Austin Sisk threw to seven different receivers for a total of 162 yards and no interceptions. Sisk combined with senior Arturo Romero for 134 total rushing yards.
“We just went out there and executed. All of the work we have been putting into this program the past few months came together for that game,” senior Tavares Brown said.
The team also debuted their new all-black uniforms designed by Duncan. “We picked those out last year and have been saving them for homecoming. We haven’t really decided what were going to do with them the rest of the season, but expect to see them again,” Duncan said.
As the clocked ticked to zero, the bleachers emptied as fan rushed the field to celebrate. In a matter of seconds, there were hundreds of people surrounding the victorious Longhorns during the coaches’ post-game speech.
“It was amazing. People were crying and it was very emotional. Its great to know that we ended the losing streak,” senior Tyler McClung said.
Parkway West currently is tough division, including two schools (Parkway Central and Kirkwood) in the top 10 Missouri Class 5 High school football teams.
“At any point, these guys could have quit, but they have come back every week,” Duncan said. “We always try to relate sports to real life. Life is a series of problems and how you deal with it determines what kind of person you are. These young men are resilient, and its nice to see their hard work pay off.”
