Outrageous clothes or the lack thereof, a new location at Brooklyn, New York’s Barclay’s Center, and a plethora of famous faces made for one of the most interesting pop culture events of 2013 thus far. Among those faces were stars dressed to impress including Ellie Goulding in a spiked neutral Amato dress, Shailene Woodley in a Pucci ensemble, and Miley Cyrus in a flesh colored bra and boy-cut shorts as she performed her hit We Can’t Stop wearing a tiny teddy bear outfit and ending up wearing a small nude top and barely there bottoms.
“I liked Miley’s performance the most, and I think she’s pretty cool. I would be friends with her! I think that her outfit and the teddy bears that danced around her made it memorable,” senior Jason Erwin said.
And memorable she was. Even four days after Miley’s seemingly infamous performance people are talking. But not all of this talk is completely positive.
“First of all, the choice of color was not great because she chose to wear something that looked like a skin color. The idea was to appear as naked as she could possibly appear. I mean whatever. It was strange, and it was bizzare. That’s partially why I don’t watch those things!” Spanish teacher Mrs. Bernstein said.
Stirring up another pot of pop culture drama were music stars Taylor Swift in Herve Leger by Max Azaria and Selena Gomez in Atelier Versace. Although this drama is not about their amazing choices in royal blue gowns but rather Swift’s choice in words as her ex boyfriend Harry Styles took the stage with his boy band One Direction. Taking away from the classiness of her finger waves and chic dress, Swift seemed to mouth four words to her famous best friend insinuating her hate for Styles.
“In interview that I saw, Selena Gomez said that Taylor was responding to Selena saying that she wasn’t going to win a VMA. I genuinely thought that is what it was about,” senior Hilli Alden.
Although Alden’s point of view has been supported by many news organizations, many others have claimed that this week Selena has failed to comment on Taylor’s words. Either way, the 2013 VMA’s made for a drama-filled night for the ladies of music.
