On April 25, the Alternative Children’s Theatre sixth hour Class performed Rumpelstiltskin and The Gingerbread Man.
The performers spent two months preparing for the show. Ninety percent of the students memorized their lines. The students dressed in variations of standard Fairytale costumes for the performance, and designed and created their own scenic backdrops.
Senior Eric Franco played the role of the boy in the Gingerbread Man.
“I had to rescue the gingerbread man from the wolves,” Franco said. “Before the play I was excited and happy. I felt tired afterwards.”
Theatre teacher Amie Gossett obtained a Special Education certification in order to teach the course.
“I’ve been wanting to offer this class for the past eight years. The difference between these classes and my other classes is that they progress at a slower, modified pace. The students appreciate the time we spend with them. We also focus on working on social and interaction skills. The kids are getting life experience. It’s nice to watch them take ownership in all they do in the class,” Gossett said.
