On Saturday, April 13, Mormons from age 16 to 18 from Parkway West, and even as far out as Springfield, Illinois, decked out in their dresses, corsages, suits and ties to celebrate what’s known as Mormon Prom.
“It was a lot of fun,” senior McKinzie Davis said. “I got to see a lot of people from a lot of different areas from all over the state.”
Every year, a theme is selected and the prom is centered around it. This year’s theme was Greek.
“This year, with the Greek theme, they placed a bunch of Greek columns and wrapped them in white cloth. At the refreshment table, there was a basin of water with flowers floating in it. It was really pretty,” Davis said.
The prom is not very different from Parkway West’s Prom that will occur on Saturday, April 27th at Kemp Auto Museum. Food is served at the beginning of the dance, and the rest of the prom is for dancing and socializing with other people. Unlike Prom, no King and Queen are selected. There is no prom court. It’s mostly about people who share the same background to come together and have fun.
“The dance is a lot more relaxed and there is no need to worry about music with provocative themes or inappropriate language,” junior Eli Harris said. “It was fun to spend time with kids my age that share the exact same values as I do.”
The Mormon Prom happens every year. However, the invitation to attend is open to all.
