The Scholar Bowl team, led by senior captain Elizabeth Carroll, qualified for nationals March 9 by finishing as one of the top five teams in a regional qualifying tournament held at Mizzou. The team has qualified for nationals the past two years. The team learned they qualified via email a week after the tournament.
“We were kind of expecting to qualify, so when we found out we were all just relieved,” Carroll said, “We are just expecting to enjoy ourselves and play some good quiz bowl.”
The team practices about an hour a week usually before school. To practice, they read and write questions, as well as research content they struggle with during games. Team members also conduct presentations about a topic they are strong in.
“This is my first semester doing it, and what helps me prepare is going to meetings and practices in the mornings,” sophomore Hope Cho said.
The Scholar Bowl team consists of Carroll, seniors Andrew George and Jaron Ma, juniors Kiwi Hatton, Imad Kahn, JD Lister, David McKnight, Brenna Ryan, Jim Sanders and Danny Tiffin and sophomores Amos Chen, Hope Cho, John Garbero Sarah Shin and Sam Wait.
They will compete in nationals on May 24-26 in Atlanta, GA. There will be teams from all over the United States competing.
“I think you have to work hard and play hard to earn a spot at nationals, and that’s what we did,” George said.
The team hopes to raise proceeds from a dine-out night this Thursday, Apr. 18 at Noodles and Company on Baxter. Show your support and let the cashier know you are present for the Parkway West Scholar Bowl Team.
