![In the 1950s, the first recorded spikes in global temperatures were recorded, and ever since, Earth has been in the midst of a disastrous climate crisis, as rising temperatures wreak havoc on susceptible regions and destroy animal habitats worldwide. Junior Nidhi Pejathaya helped found West’s Sustainability Council to create a space where students can educate themselves about climate change and do their part to preserve the environment. “When you're going out of your way to recycle [or] reuse your clothes to save water, you're saving people. You're saving adults, you're saving families, you're saving children. You're saving a whole generation. ![“I’m the vice president of the Muslim Student Association (MSA), the co-president of the Women in Healthcare club, and [am also in] of ABC club, NHS first aid, the diplomacy club, and other volunteering activities [in my community.] My main goal in these clubs is to be actively engaged in the school and give back to the community. [Through these opportunities,] I’ve learned to be a better organizer and planner, especially with my roles in MSA and Women in Healthcare. I think these skills will be valuable towards the career path I choose. I’m particularly interested in the medical field, which is why I co-founded Women in Healthcare. As a freshman, I was the chief financial officer of the Muslim Student Association. This year, I’m the vice president. We’ve worked hard to improve the organization and make the club more fun and interactive for everyone. It’s been great to see the club grow, with a lot of new freshmen joining. Balancing all of these activities with my schoolwork can be challenging at times, but the whole team helps with the workload. She asked how many people actually come to our meetings, so I explained that we usually have 35 to 40 people. In years past, parents signed up outside classroom doors the night of conferences to meet with their child’s teachers. On Feb. 26, however, parents will sign up online for a seven minute conference slot for each of their child’s teachers. The goal of this new format is to improve conference efficiency.
West is using this online registration as a free pilot program through a company called MyConferenceTime. The feedback from West parents about this software will determine if West or other Parkway schools will use the program in the future.
“We want to eliminate parent confusion with MyConferenceTime. Also, we think it could help get the teachers prepared for their conferences and remain organized,” Freshmen Principal Mario Pupillo said.
Parents will receive both a phone call and email with detailed directions as to how to sign up for conferences on Monday, Feb. 25. Registration for conferences will open Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 7:00 a.m. and registration will close Tuesday, March 5 at 11:59 p.m. Parents should visit www.myconferencetime.com/parkwaywest if they wish to set up a conference with teachers.
Conferences will be held, March 7 from 3:00 until 8:00 p.m.
