Throughout the week, students have decided on ways to show their support for sophomore Alison Owen. Students have been glued to their phones, awaiting updates on Owen’s condition and progress. In addition to the signs outside of school and the tweets that tag “#Hope4Ali,” on Wednesday, Feb. 6, students and parents chanted “hope for Ali” for a full minute during the Varsity Boys’ Basketball game against St. Louis University High (SLUH). The chant took place during a one minute time out and lasted the full 60 seconds. SLUH parents even joined the students in chanting. Student fans continued to wear their headbands through the game to show their support. In addition, the basketball team taped the letters “AO” and wrote “hope for Ali” on their shoes to display their support for Owen.
Updates on Owen:
Feb. 7: As of 11:40 AM, doctors began to ween Owen off her medicine and ventilator, in hopes of waking her up. The bolt that was in Owen’s head was removed this morning, meaning doctors no longer will measure the pressure in her brain. Owen was taken off of her blood pressure medication and midnight and remained off of it.
Feb. 8: As of 6:35 AM, Owen’s neurosurgeon spoke to Owen, who then turned her head and looked at him. She was able to wiggle her toes and her thumb. The surgeon was pleased with her progress. Owen is partially breathing on her own. Today is a critical day in Owen’s recovery. Her doctors and mother have asked that Owen receives no visitors.
Updates will be made as they are sent out by her family via Caring Bridge.
