On Nov. 19 Parkway will begin the installation of solar panels on Parkway West. The installation takes a week to install with no upfront fee however it requires a $150 a month lease payment. The school is limited to one 25 kW system.
“The solar panels will provide the same amount of energy needed to power three homes a year,” Brightergy Representative Cindy Bambini said.
Each system has an online monitoring system in which students can gather data. Brightergy has developed a full-scale curriculum along with the EarthWays Center, and is incorporating this into a science and math teacher training this week.
“Parkway is the first school district in Missouri to have solar panels installed,” Bambini said. “It is the largest collective installation of the solar panels in the state.”
Students and teachers alike can share what they are learning and creating from the solar-integrated curriculum by going to parkwayschoolsgoingsolar.tumblr.com.
“The tumblr blog will be a living scrapbook compiled from posts district-wide, and by tagging tweets and posts with #mysolarschool, students will be able to join a larger conversation about the solar panels at Parkway,” Bambini said.
