“I love working with students. I love seeing ‘aha moments’ [from my students] and when things click. I enjoy offering study opportunities or travel opportunities specifically. Im really eager to take students on trips, especially Spanish-speaking communities to see them interact in a real-world scenario with native people. The hardest part of teaching is its crazy political. There are a lot of agendas that get pushed in school and it frustrates me because it shouldnt be about agendas, administration, and politics. It should be about students and their learning and providing the best environment so sometimes it is like a dual-sided coin.” - Jessica Verweyst, Spanish

“Traveling is my favorite thing to do since my family loves to travel too, and we always visit new places with every opportunity we get. Over spring break, I went to Rosemary Beach in Florida with my friend. My family loves traveling to warm places, so a few of my favorite vacations have been when we visited Jamaica, the Grand Cayman Islands and Mexico. I would describe myself as adventurous, so traveling is extremely exciting to me since I visit places that I only ever get to hear about. When traveling, there’s also no stress of school or anything back home, so it’s like a whole week of fun. Over the Summer, I’m going to be traveling to Alaska, where I get to try bobsledding for the first time, and I’m very grateful I get the opportunity to do something like that.” - Emma Nunnelee, 11

“Im interested in a career in photography. I plan on traveling, and Id like to intern or shadow a photographer. Theres a program Im looking into where I would spend 12 weeks in Spain, and be able to see amazing sights and learn the language. I decided to take a gap year because I felt that going straight to college was not going to be beneficial for me and taking a year to figure out what I wanted to do. I was worried I was gonna regret it but I have been thinking about how to be more excited for it compared to nervous and worried. I think the more I plan, what I want to do, and thinking about all the cool trips I can go on, it makes me more excited compared to being nervous for a gap year.” -Anna Amato

Airplanes tend to delay or cancel flights due to freezing temperatures, snow, ice or thunderstorms. A severe snowstorm caused flight shortages on Dec. 21-26, impacting travelers like English ASC teacher Kristen Witt. “It was out of [everyone’s] control how the weather would turn out. They were doing the best they could [do], and the agent at the gate did a great job of keeping everybody informed about what was going on and kept us calm,” Witt said.
