Putting his arms up to strike the batter out, alumnus Trevor Dannegger makes the call behind home plate. Dannegger started officiating minor league baseball games in 2016, along with being a substitute teacher in his time off. “I try to stand out in both roles,” Dannegger said. “Whether it be asking a teacher to continue their lesson instead of showing a video or going out of my way to help players on the field.”

With his baseball season canceled, freshman Cooper Walkoff keeps up with his workouts virtually. Walkoff has trained with a personal trainer at D1, a gym, for a year now, but due to quarantine, the gym has gone virtual. “Every morning my family and I log-in virtually to D1 training classes. They start at 9:30 a.m. and it gets me out of bed,” Walkoff said. “These workouts have been good for me to stay in shape for baseball. I am looking forward to playing baseball and seeing all of my friends and teammates when this whole thing is over.”

Youth baseball coach and alumni Sherron Rives tells his players the long season is not over yet after winning first place in a spring tournament. Rives led his 14 and under team to three tournament wins in 2018. “It was really different to play for him,” sophomore Nathan Basler said. “He had a different passion for the game, and you could see it in his eyes when he was coaching. Post surgery, junior Weston McGuire prepares for practicing patience rather than baseball the next few weeks as he recovers from facial surgery. Doctors went through his eye to place a metal plate to aid in the regrowth of his orbital bone that was shattered when he was struck in the face by a baseball. “It didn’t hurt very much by the time surgery came a week later, I was just very uncomfortable and I just wanted to get it over with. I want to miss out on as little baseball as possible,” McGuire said.
