Blocking the Lutheran North defensive line, sophomore Parker Cummins (61) and seniors Jake Braymiller (71) and Josh Gansen (1) clear a running lane for junior Ja’Marion Wayne (2). The Oct. 3 contest took place a day after the originally scheduled game against St. Francis Borgia was cancelled due to quarantine restrictions. “If I could tell my younger self something about playing football before COVID-19, it would be to play every game like it’s your last. I know that is a cliché, but now that is such a reality,” Gansen said. “With all the crazy schedule changes we truly have no idea when our last game is going to be, and—just like that—my high school football career could end, and that would suck. So go out and give it 100% every night because that very well could be your last opportunity to.”

With his baseball season canceled, freshman Cooper Walkoff keeps up with his workouts virtually. Walkoff has trained with a personal trainer at D1, a gym, for a year now, but due to quarantine, the gym has gone virtual. “Every morning my family and I log-in virtually to D1 training classes. They start at 9:30 a.m. and it gets me out of bed,” Walkoff said. “These workouts have been good for me to stay in shape for baseball. I am looking forward to playing baseball and seeing all of my friends and teammates when this whole thing is over.”

While in AP 2D Design and Photography, senior Sarah Lashly cuts out pictures of artist examples for her most recent project. This AP course went through major curriculum changes this year and now requires students to do more writing along with their photography projects. “I love the class because I get to be creative and express what I feel, but it is also very stressful for me since the curriculum is so new and different,” Lashly said.

Running past spectators, junior Emily Sipp conquers hills at Parkway Central on Nov. 2. The team placed fifth out of eight teams competing at the meet. “I think there were some rough moments during the race,” Sipp said. “A rough moment for me means to get nervous. I start to panic and I breathe really hard. When it has passed, something clicks in my head, and I have this sense of relief. Overall, it was a good race. I had a good finish [and] placed top 30.”

During a game against the Lindbergh Flyers, sophomore Karen Trevor-Roberts guards her goal. “I do everything to make sure the ball doesn’t get into the goal, even during practice when a lot of balls are being shot against me,” Trevor-Roberts said. “[Field hockey] gives you a family. It teaches me teamwork and even helps with social skills. It also teaches me how to balance school and sports.”
