Greeting his 3-year-old daughter Molly McCabe, Principal John McCabe smiles after getting pied in the face by senior Esha Francis during lunch. McCabe got pied as a reward for school spirit at the Parkway Holiday Cup Volleyball Tournament on Wednesday Dec. 14. “[Molly] just started her first year of Pre-K and shes loving it. I told her all weekend I was getting pied and she thought it was really funny, so she just wanted to see dad getting pied. She loved it but she told me she was a little bit scared because she didn’t recognize me,” McCabe said.

Swimming the 500-freestyle, junior Maddi Lang competes in a home meet against South, Tuesday, Dec. 13. Already five weeks into the season, Lang improved her freestyle time by five seconds. “I loved the meets and how we all supported each other, it was a positive [environment]. At our very first meet, I could see our team at the side of the pool cheering for everyone, which was a cool [experience.] Even though some people might not have [as good of a ranking] as others, we all supported each other,” Lang said.

Fine-tuning his masterpiece, junior Jeff Bakers uses mineral spirits to help develop more detail in painting. Bakers favorite work from this semester was painting still-life objects including a chair, skates and fruit. “My teacher inspired me to do better because at first I wasn’t going to try in this class, but she influenced me to try harder [in my artwork],” Baker said. “This class was a lot harder, a lot more [work] than I expected.”

Using Starbursts to represent a caption, freshmen Kate Hardy and Julia Kiffer recreate a yearbook spread with food. Convergence Journalism 1 students learned how to design yearbook double-page spreads using various snacks and candies to represent different design elements. “It helped me see the layout and learn how to set up the page myself,” Hardy said. “It was challenging but worth it in the end when we got to eat it all.”

During a Crime and Law mock trial, senior Nadir Gheith acts as the defendant, Jack Percy who is on trial for the first-degree murder of Butch Burly. Officer Matthew Paubel removed Gheiths handcuffs at the start of the trial after escorting him to the pretend courtroom. “[The most challenging part of the mock trial] was seeing me lose because I hardly lose, and I needed to bounce back from that. [I lost] because the jury hates me. I don’t know what I did wrong, but they just didn’t like me,” Gheith said.

At the end of the first act of the fall play ‘Silent Sky,’ Henrietta Leavitt played by senior Nicole [Blue] Schade, receives an important message from Williamina Fleming, played by junior Dana Zafarani. Schade described the script as beautiful and heartfelt and said that they have a lot to learn from their character. “I loved getting to help the audience see how beautiful this world is because that’s what Henrietta’s core belief was; she had so much wonder for the world. I related to that, and it was an honor to be the one to tell that story, and make the audience feel that same sense of wonder.”

Culinary mentor class allowed students to assist others in the kitchen and build relationships. “I loved this class because I loved making new connections and seeing how it brightens people’s day just to say hello,” Zachary said. “Helping people has always been something I’m passionate about and good at.”

In AP psychology, students learned about the human senses and perception and how they could be altered. “When I put on the goggles, everything looked rainbow and there were blindspots everywhere. If the tennis ball was to the right, I reached to the left,” Freed said. “It was so funny watching everyone try to get the ball in the trash can. Nobody was even close.”

Assembling a bird feeder in the peace garden, junior Krish Bhagat sets up and writes a blog about his year-long project to create a songbird-friendly environment. A long-time lover of birds, Bhagat volunteered at the Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center and founded the Animal Appreciation Club. “I’ve written, read and taken photos of songbirds. I’d done just about everything short of doing something for the West community,” Bhagat said. “When I walked by the Peace Garden one day and saw all the songbirds flying around, I realized that I could do something that could actually make an impact.”

Ceramics class allows students to create projects they can use in everyday life. “It’s very therapeutic,” Sabbatini said. “I like how it’s very individual and it’s just working with yourself and your clay.”
