Politics Club

Co-president and junior Trisha Manna creates safe space for political discussion

Controversial topics like packing the courts, the 2020 election and gun control, are discussed calmly in discussions led by juniors Trisha Manna and Marissa Liu, who started Politics Club this year in hopes of creating a safe space to share and learn from differing opinions.

Interested members can join the meetings every Thursday at 8 a.m. by emailing Manna or Liu and asking to be added to the club GroupMe.

What is the purpose of your club?

“Our purpose was to have a place where people can openly discuss their opinions on political issues. I’m really interested in politics and I feel like sometimes I can’t discuss these things with my family or my friends, so it’s nice to have a club where I can do that and have that space for other people to do that too.”

What is your favorite part of the club?

My favorite part of the club is hearing other peoples’ perspectives, especially when they’re not the same as my own. I think people can sometimes get trapped in their own bubble and not really get exposure to other peoples’ opinions. It’s important to get exposure to that, because then you can understand more people and build your empathy.”

Why would you love to have new members join your club?

“Right now, our club tends to lean toward one side; most people tend to have the same viewpoint. There are some people who do have different views, but the more people we have, the better range of views we can get and the better discussions we can have.”
