President and senior Kathryn McAuliffe discusses National Honors Society service

Turning T-shirts into dog toys, raiding closets for old clothes and supporting students through peer tutoring, members of the National Honors Society (NHS) work throughout the year to provide service to, in and around the school community.

What is the purpose of your club?

“The purpose of NHS is to provide service to our local community while honoring academic achievement. Students complete service opportunities to give back to the community while also maintaining high academic [standards].”

What is your favorite part of the club?

“My favorite part of the NHS is all the service opportunities we get to do. With more than 50 members and 15 hours of guaranteed service this year, that’s more than 750 hours of helping other people. As simple as it may be, helping someone can turn around not only their day, but also yours. I think service is the easiest way to have a positive impact on others, and it’s what I love about the NHS.”

Why would you love to have new members join your club?

“I’d love more people to join the NHS so the NHS can expand its positive community impact. Keeping a high grade-point average and committing yourself to service is the best way to be accepted into the NHS. More people means more service, and that’s the best thing we can do.”
