Leading the race, senior Chloe Hershenow competes in the conference championship. Hershenow plans to continue her running career at the university of Tulsa in the fall. “Being able to run collegiately is a culmination of having coach Cutelli and Coach John because they are both great coaches and who have pushed me and having the team I have had; they have really supported me,” Hershenow said.

After finishing her final cross country season for the Longhorns with her second all-state finish, placing 21st at the state meet Nov. 3, senior Chloe Hershenow has committed to run DI cross country and track for Tulsa University in the fall.

Throughout the process of choosing a college, Hershenow received letters and emails from dozens of programs that were trying to recruit her.

“For me, when looking at colleges, my plan was always looking at academics first and trying to pick a school where I would want to go besides running,” Hershenow said. “Then [the] Tulsa coach reached out to me so I started looking into Tulsa more and it turned out to be pretty much everything I was looking for in a school. I went on an official visit. I could tell that coach is awesome and the girls on the team were so great to me.”

She received an official offer and signed a National Letter of Intent Dec. 9.

“They had given me a range [of scholarship] in the summer and I knew it was really good and would make it so I could actually go to Tulsa. But to actually get the official offer in writing was so exciting because it solidified that it all was actually happening,” Hershenow said. “And honestly it wasn’t about being DI. I just knew I loved Tulsa and the thing is knowing I had the opportunity to go DI I thought to myself why not and I think I can really push my running abilities as far as I can go on the team at Tulsa.”

Head track coach Kevin John first saw potential in Hershenow when she was a freshman.

“[When I found out about her signing], I was obviously proud of Chloe for accomplishing such a great goal, but I also was not surprised,” John said. “I learned when she was a freshman to never doubt her, or she would prove me wrong. Chloe has worked really hard and done all of the little things she needs to do to be successful, so this has been a long time coming, and she has earned it.”

— Chloe Hershenow

Hershenow, who started running in middle school, has run cross country and track all four years of high school.

“Chloe has grown from an unassuming freshman to a role model and leader for our team. Two conference championships, two district titles, three sectional titles, three top-ten state finishes including a runner up in 2018 shows the impact she had on this team,” cross country coach Charlie Cutelli said. “She was part of all of that. Most importantly though, younger girls saw who she was, how she trained, and how she raced and so her legacy will live on at West High.”

Although finding a good running program was an important factor in her college decision, Hershenow also was looking for a school where she could study engineering.

“I love that Tulsa is a great engineering program which is what I want to go into. It is a small school which I wasn’t happy about at first but I think it will actually be a better fit for me,” Hershenow said. “Everything I heard about Tulsa when I was visiting and just talking to people about their experiences was positive and it affirmed that Tulsa was definitely a good option.”

For now, Hershenow is running for the Warriors indoor track club to train for outdoor track and has a goal to break five minutes in the mile before graduation.

“I think running at Tulsa next year will be an opportunity to make some really good relationships with the girls on the team and to just explore all that I can do in running because in high school you aren’t given the ability to train as hard as you possibly can,” Hershenow said. “I’m excited to see what I can do in college.”
