While at the hospital, Margot Barnes snuggles under a warm blanket. Margot is the second child of English teacher Dan Barnes and wife Julie Barnes. “My first thought was just awe. Totally awestruck,” D. Barnes said.

Early in the morning, at 6:25 a.m on Nov. 12, 2017, English teacher Dan Barnes’ daughter was born. Margot Paloma Barnes weighed in at 8 lbs 5oz and measured 20 1/2 inches long.

“I had just watched my wife labor and work to bring life into the world and to see the results just leaves a man dumbfounded. To see my daughter, and my son, for that matter, arrive into the world after months of anticipation and hours of hard labor, I am left speechless but filled with love,” D. Barnes said.

English teacher Dan Barnes’ newborn baby girl has impacted both his personal and professional life.

“All my outlets have covers for one thing. [The newborn] basically throws off my whole schedule. I sleep, eat and stay awake when she says it’s okay,” D. Barnes said.

Barnes was out for five days and returned Monday, Nov. 20, but he spent time at home with his family over break.

“I played legos with my son. For my wife, [I] did chores, cooked her meals, helped her feed the baby, cleaned diapers, etc. As for the baby, kept those diapers clean, kept her fed and comforted her,” D. Barnes said.

Senior Sydney Kinzy is a student aide for D. Barnes and has been enrolled in many of his classes.

“The biggest difference is that [D. Barnes] is more tired from having to stay up and take care of the baby. I honestly wish that he had more paternity leave so that he could take care of himself as well as his child,” Kinzy said.

English teacher and close friend of D. Barnes, Casey Holland said all of the department is thrilled when a member has a baby.

We celebrated by throwing him a surprise ‘sprinkle’ with treats and gifts to welcome in the new baby girl,” Holland said.

Holland states D. Barnes always expects his students to be hardworking and enthusiastic day in and day out.

“Mr. Barnes is a good dude. He has a wonderful sense of humor and is very kind,” Holland said. “I am fortunate to work with him and I always wish the best for him personally and professionally as I do all of my colleagues.”
