We’re Really Clef-er: Most Excellent Eighties

This time, the playlist got a little out of hand (“My bad,” news editor Justin Cupps said).

If you are an avid reader of our blog, you know that most of our playlists are half an hour, at most. That comes out to about eight songs, and we have always felt like that is reasonable. By the time we finished this 80s playlist it was 41 songs, clocking in at a whopping three hours. Fortunately, Justin got his decades confused and six of the songs got cut (look for that playlist of cuts soon).

I honestly didn’t know how many of my favorite songs were from the eighties until I was forced to decide between them. I also had no idea that Justin loved 80s songs so much. The first nine songs on the playlist are my picks, while the other 26 are Justin’s. For a while I was in an eighties cover band, so most of my choices come from the songs that I struggled over for months as a young guitarist. However, songs like a-ha’s “Take on me” and “Cult of Personality” by Living Color are some of my own personal favorites. Eighties songs are a great way to listen to catchy, trashy pop music and still call yourself hipster, and the songs I pick reflect that (especially Wham!’s “Wake me up before you go-go”).

Justin’s songs are a little more randomly picked. While he definitely avoids some of the more pop sounding songs from the eighties, everything else is apparently fair game. His selection ranges from classic rock songs like AC/DC’s “Back in Black” and “Welcome to the Jungle” by Guns N’ Roses to sing-along songs like Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’.” I chided myself when I saw that he had put “Walk This Way” by Aerosmith on the list, as that is one of my all-time favorite songs and I couldn’t believe I had forgotten about it.

Considering this playlist has almost three hours of material, ranging from the origins of pop to classic hard rock songs, there is something for everyone. So put on some hammer pants, tighten your roller-blades and get transported back in time by listening to our most excellent Eighties playlist.
