![January 2024 marks over seven decades since the publishing of “The Bell Jar.” In those seven decades, the novel has opened the eyes of countless women to the unfair treatment they’ve faced, particularly being percieved as nothing more than mothers and the consequences that arise from that. “To my knowledge, [“The Bell Jar” was] one of the earliest novels that explores a womans mental health and inner journey and allows her to go through struggles and make mistakes without vilifying [her]. Shes ambitious yet flawed and unsure how to proceed, like [many] women at the beginning of the 1960s. My mom was born in 1950 and grew up hearing that if she wanted to work, she had three choices: nurse, secretary and teacher. It was a brave new world when she found out there were more options. But that also comes with fear and anxiety and the judgment of others. I didnt share a lot of similar experiences or have a similar background to my non-first-generation peers. Sometimes Id feel distanced or like I didnt belong because of that. I wanted to meet more first-generation students and be with people who connected with my experiences. My parents encouraged me to stay dedicated to my education, and thats one of the main focuses of the club. I wanted to create a space for everyone to come together [at] West, stay dedicated to our studies and have an opportunity to volunteer with friends. One of the challenges we faced in getting this club started was finding opportunities for us to organize school and volunteer[ing] events. With a simple read through of the song titles you probably figured out that this wasn’t anything at all like Vice President Joe Biden’s “2016 Summer Playlist” or President Obama’s “Holidays with the Obamas” at all. No, this playlist is geared to the towards the two people (out of the 325 million eligible) we have chosen as a nation to possibly represent us in the Executive branch.
The music truly does a phenomenal job this time, embodying my thoughts on the election with hard rock classics such as “It’s the End of the World As We Know It” by R.E.M. to relatively modern hits like “American Idiot” by Green Day. When Dani first told me she was making this playlist, I half expected a playlist entirely filled with Rage Against the Machine, 90’s grunge-rock, ‘everything sucks’ music. To my surprise, that wasn’t the case; the playlist encompasses all sorts of genres from classic rock, hip hop, rap and even speed metal.
Why don’t we just give the job to both of them and make a cooky four-season sitcom out of it?

While it is easy to get caught up in the rockin’ guitar or colonial hip hop or even the Armenian-American screaming about democracy and hypocrisy, all of the music does have some deeper meaning to it. This hit me with “What’s Going On,” when Marvin Gaye sings, “You Know We’ve Got to Find a Way / To Bring Some Lovin’ Here Today.” It isn’t necessarily all about how our political system is screwed up (even though it is). But in these songs and just by seeing the effects of the election, we need to realize that the American people are also at fault, partially, for letting this happen.
The highlight of the playlist is Gaye’s “What’s Going On.” Though originally meant to speak on the U.S. involvement in Vietnam, it doesn’t render the song meaningless; there is just as much division now over the election as there was in the 60s and 70s over the Vietnam War. Frankly, everyone needs to hear about “how to bring some lovin’ here today” after the election we’ve had.
