We’re Really Clef-er: Indie Folk Playlist

NOTE: I do suggest you listen to the playlist before reading this because it will make a lot more sense once you do.

After finding another online newspaper that made weekly playlists based on holidays or other major events, the Pathfinder editorial board thought ‘We must have it!’; thus, this blog was born.

The two of us have decided that, to keep this blog from being “a repetitive cycle of either of us making a playlist and writing that it is the best thing in the world over and over again,” one of us will make a playlist of music pertaining to a certain holiday, event or genre of music and the other will write about it for each entry. I got gypped with writing the first week.

However, in looking for inspiration to translate thoughts about music to coherent sentences, I found that this playlist of indie folk music made things easier to communicate. Featuring songs by NEEDTOBREATHE, the Lumineers, the Avett Brothers and various others, this set is quite interesting musically.

When I say that it is musically interesting, I don’t mean that it necessarily is the most intricate rhythmically or lyrically, but interesting rather because of the sheer amount of influence from other genres. There are obvious rock influences from NEEDTOBREATHE and the Avett Brothers and undertones of country from the entire lineup.

The highlights of the playlist are “HAPPINESS” by NEEDTOBREATHE, and “Ain’t No Man” by the Avett Brothers because of the upbeat nature and rock elements of the songs; they are songs that are energizing and are generally great to listen to.

However, this is most certainly not the musical equivalent of that one playlist titled “GET PUMPED!!!” (featuring discount Bohemian Rhapsody; thank you Matthew Pitassi), and is quite the opposite of it. Indie Folk–the playlist–really isn’t going to pump you up to run a marathon or do all of your homework in a single sitting; it would be useful for ambient noise while doing your work or just for listening to music because you possess the ability and time to do so.

Regardless of what you choose to do, sit back, relax, do whatever you wish and enjoy some indie folk music. Follow pwestpub on Spotify and watch for new playlists as they arrive.
