Preparing to hit the ball, Mark Sanders gets into position. The Longhorns dominated the Parkway North Vikings 14-4. “I really liked playing on the team because it was challenging being a freshman on the varsity team and a lot of fun,” Sanders said.

The Longhorns finished off last season with a 10-19 record. With a senior heavy roster coming into the 2015-16 season the Longhorns look to continue the exponential growth seen over the past few years.

“Last year I felt like we never really knew what our lineup was going to be, but coming into this season we are going to have a lot more depth and I feel our lineup will be more solidified,” junior Caleb Carswell said.

This ‘powerhouse’ lineup is something the Longhorns has not been able to rely on in the past.

“The big key for us this year is going to be our lineup, every spot in the lineup is a threat, and that is something that West hasn’t had in awhile. If our bats can come out of the gates hot, I think that will be the major contributor to our overall success this season. If we can get our pitching rotation in order I expect some great things from our team this year,” senior infielder Grant Brueggenjohann said

The Longhorns have six returning seniors to the squad.

“With our senior heavy roster this year, the seniors need to get the younger guys involved. Even if they don’t get the playing time they may have wanted, being on varsity is great experience,” senior infielder Bobby Connor said. “Seniors will be able to pass on the wisdom and experience from playing on varsity in the past to the underclassmen to hopefully make them better players which means a better team in the future, after the seniors have left and graduated.”

Tryouts for baseball and all other spring sports began on Monday, Feb. 29.

“Hopefully this year we will be able to get outside for at least a portion of tryouts. In the past we’ve always been forced inside due to weather and haven’t been able to do all of the things the coaches would’ve liked to have done,” senior outfielder Daniel Bickert said.
