ISIS claims responsibility for Flight 9268 crash and Paris bombing

Two hundred and twenty-four Russian civilians were killed in a plane crash in the Sinai Peninsula, Egypt. This was not any ordinary plane crash. The cockpit voice recorder was recovered in the crash and investigators discovered a loud blast that brought the plane down.

President Obama announced Thursday, Nov. 5, that there was a possible bomb planted on Metrojet Flight 9268 before it took off in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, to its destination in St. Petersburg, Russia. The US intercepted communications after the crash from the Islamist terrorist group, ISIS or “Daesh”, to Syria. A memorial was held at the St. Isaac’s Cathedral in St. Petersburg where the bell was rung 224 times for all of the victims of Flight 9268.

The Sinai affiliate admitted to the bomb on the plane but refused to say how it was done. Investigators came up with a most likely scenario, jihadists (ISIS members) planted a bomb with a timer set for it to detonate in mid flight by someone who had access to the plane besides being a passenger, meaning it must have been someone who had access to other parts of the plane, such as airport staff.

US officials say that a small bomb with a timer was enough to bring down an aircraft. The bomb was likely to be made out of C4 or a moldable bomb that can take any shape. C4, a common plastic explosive, was one of the only small bombs that could do enough damage to bring down Flight 9268.

“If ISIS did plant this bomb then that could bring Russia into the problem of what ISIS is doing around the world,” History Teacher Jeff Chazen said.

ISIS has been targeting Middle Eastern countries, Northern African countries and parts of Eastern Asia. A recent attack in Paris, France, was coordinated by five men who were equipped with assault rifles and suicide vests screaming “Allahu Akbar,” meaning “God is greater.” The attack resulted in 128 casualties; the Islamic State of Syria has claimed responsibility for the attack.

“It really is a horrible thing that happened, and since the theory was that ISIS brought down the plane, I think that someone should put a stop to them,” History Teacher Jim Hermann said.

The Syrian army and the Kurdish army have been fighting against ISIS for years, but have not been successful in recent weeks. Russia has been giving the Syrian military air support. The Iranian and Hezbollah militia have also been taking action against by coordinating with the Syrian army to get the most out of Russia’s air strikes.

“ISIS is mostly dangerous to neighboring countries under ISIS control, if we were to take action against them we should stop them from expanding onto other countries,” History Teacher Mel Trotier said.
