Music has been used to benefit the less fortunate in more ways than one before, and the Feminist club, sponsored by history teacher Lara Boles, a benefit concert for that exact purpose on Nov. 6.

The Crew
Seniors Kathryn Harter, Shannon Anderson, Dinara Manafova, Mariel McMindes and Poonita Sheevam helped collect tickets.

“It took three months for the club to plan the concert and four hours to set up the stage, the speakers and all the lights on the night of the event. It was tiring but very worth it in the end,” senior Co-Feminist Club President Mariel McMindes said.

Three bands played: The Happy Little Trees, sucks to be pluto and The Freelance Frauds.

“The songs I picked have a lot to do with combating the stress with the empowering feelings of feeling like I’ve connected with an audience,” senior Jacob Cupps, a member of sucks to be pluto, said. “It made it a little easier for me to get on stage knowing I was singing about stuff that I really believed instead of just making music for music’s sake.”

Freelance Frauds
The band ‘The Freelance Frauds’ played last in the concert.

The concert raised over $715.

It was so fun getting to put all of this together and see the finished result be a success,” Mcmindes said.

Proceeds from the concert benefited Operation Keep Girls in School, which works to provide an education for teenage girls in India. Partnered with locally founded nonprofit group Wings of Hope, the operation aims to build a factor to employ local women and produce necessary products to allow girls to have access to education.

“The charity’s mission is to help girls in Balasore, India stay in school and combat the stigma that surrounds menstruation. In India, one in five girls drop out of school because of menstruation (they are taught to be ashamed of it),” McMindes said.
