The Longhorns came out strong winning the first two games of the season; the first Longhorn Football team to do this in over a decade. With a loss against Rockwood Summit last week the Longhorns look to bounce back in their first home game of the year against University City.

“I am very excited to play University City at home this year, and I’m looking forward to having the chance to make up for last years 20-7 loss. If we stay focused throughout the game and we compete at our highest level we should be able to pull off a victory. I think we’ve got a very capable team that can do some great things this season, as long as we keep our heads straight, and we push our limits,” senior Simon Lindo said.

Team chemistry has been a focal point for the Longhorns. Every Thursday night the team eats dinner at one of their teammates houses or selected restaurant as a way to bond with one another before the big game the next night.

“We are working better as a team, we are more closely knit, like a family. Everyone is trying there best and leaving everything out on the field for their brothers next to them,” senior Kyle Freebersyser said.

The family-like bond may be a key reason for their success thus far. However, they have been plagued by a couple of injuries already. Junior Nehemiah Colyer was sidelined from the field by an ankle injury, missing the past two weeks.

“Rest was the only thing that I could do after my injury, which was hard for me because I wanted to get back out on the field. But, I have been running routes the past week and I feel good and hope to be ready to go this week against University City,” Colyer said.

Another notable injury occurred last Friday evening against Rockwood Summit. Senior captain Bobby Connor broke his foot during the third quarter after receiving a pass from junior quarterback, Jack Martin. Connor will be sidelined for 4-6 weeks.

“I don’t know exactly how it happened, I just got tackled funny on a play, and heard a big pop. I didn’t think much about it at the time and continued to play for the remainder of the quarter. But, something just didn’t feel right, when I found out it was broken I was devastated. This being the last year I have the chance to play high school football, my motivation during my recovery is getting back out on the field,” Connor said.

This weeks game will be played on the 14th year anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy. Come out and show your Parkway West Pride and wear red, white and blue in remembrance of the men and women lost in 9/11.
