Season six of “Downton Abbey” will return to PBS in Jan. of 2016.

After season five of Downton Abbey, fans were left wondering about unresolved relationships, murders and marriages. With season six being the final season, many people are wondering how the show will be able to resolve all the drama in only one season.

Downton Abbey features the wealthy Crawley family, who struggles to overcome the changes of an advancing society in the early 1900s. Served by maids, butlers and footmen, some members of the family embrace the changes with new haircuts, clothes and technology. Other members are stuck in the past and refuse to accept the changes in society.

With Michelle Dockery playing the devious Lady Mary Crawley, Maggie Smith as the witty Countess of Grantham and Lily James as the sweet and innocent Lady Rose MacClare, Downton Abbey is the most popular Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) drama.

“The actors and actresses are top notch, and even when it seems like the storyline is going south, the writing is still perfect so you can understand why the story would take such an unexpected turn,” freshman Emily Dickson said.

With so many unanswered questions, the show must wrap up all loose ends in season six. Fans are wondering if Lady Mary will ever find someone to replace her late husband. Will Lady Edith Crawley, played by Laura Carmichael, ever be happy? What will happen to Lady Rose and her new husband?

“Millions of people around the world have followed the journey of the Crawley family and those who serve them for the last five years. Inevitably there comes a time when all shows should end and ‘Downton’ is no exception,” Gareth Neame, executive producer of Downton Abbey, said in an interview with PBS.

Downton Abbey averaged over 12.9 million viewers for season five, and 13.3 million viewers for season four.

“The cinematography and the costuming make you feel like you are really there, not to mention I think it has taught me more about early 1900s culture than my history class does,” Dickson said.

Since Downton Abbey first aired on PBS in 2011, it has been nominated for 51 Emmys and won 11. The show also won three Golden Globes Awards.

“Besides the beautiful costumes, architecture and setting of England, I truly enjoy the juxtaposition of the different social classes of characters.  I think the show does a wonderful job of presenting the historical events in a way that shows how everyday people were affected,” science teacher Mrs. Amy Van Matre-Woodward said.

Downton Abbey became a part of popular culture. The show was parodied on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and cast members have been on the cover of Entertainment Weekly and appeared on Good Morning America.

“I do know how grateful we are to have been allowed this unique experience. I suspect the show will always be a principal marker in most of our careers as we set out from here, and if so, I consider that a blessing and a compliment,” said Julian Fellowes, writer and creator of Downton Abbey, in an interview with PBS.
