New Year’s Resolutions

Dec. 31, 2014. New Year’s Eve. It’s not just the counting of another revolution around the Sun. It’s a time to look back on the past to see the completed year, and to dwell on 2014.

Junior Rachel Osborne broke a fortune cookie at midnight.

“We all read our fortunes aloud, because they were apparently the fortune for our whole year to come. Mine said that mental illness is worse that physical sickness. I can relate this to my running in Cross Country. Even though running is tough sometimes, I’ve always got to remember that if I make up my mind to push through, then I can. It’s always mind over matter,” Osborne said.

Osborne, 17, is making her plans for her future after high school.

“If I saw my future self after high school, I would definitely want to know what I’m going to study in college. That’s a point of confusion for me, and I would like some clarity there,” Osborne said.

Yet her confusion on what her decision will be fuels her outlook on the future.

“I know it’s always a little bit scary to grow up and to have things around you change. Life is going to change and it’s not always going to be pleasant, but it’s going to be okay,” Osborne said.

Osborne’s positive outlook on her uncertain future has made her learn valuable life lessons from 2014.

“Different doesn’t mean bad, and that’s what I’m already experiencing with this year, like all of the new kids that I’ve met in my classes and the new teachers that I get to learn from. Also, I know to be successful in life you have to break down those barriers that hold you back and say that you can’t continue, and that’s what I do everyday in running.”

While a chapter in her high school career is closing, a new story is being written that Osborne is looking forward to.

“I’m especially excited to be a senior in Cross Country this year, so that I can help the new runners learn how to compete and continue the friendly and welcoming atmosphere upheld by the team. I was welcomed instantly by the team when I joined, and I want to be that person who can help other people belong,” Osborne said.

Osborne plans to carry her experiences from to 2014 to help her in the New Year.

“I know I need to not get worried about every little thing, so I need to look at the big picture and spend time on what matters,” Osborne said. “Down the road in the future, it won’t matter if I got the highest grade on the test, but rather who I invested my life in and what differences I made to get where I am.”

Among freshman Katie Spillman’s many goals for 2015, she set the resolution of drinking more water.

“Of course I not only want to drink more water but I also want to get better grades, take more art classes and get my homework done, right away,” Spillman said.

As a freshmen, Spillman is not as concerned about the future as much as the past.

“I like New Years because it’s a time to wipe the slate clean and finally get a fresh start,” Spillman said. “After 2015 starts, you can forget about all your mistakes and past from last year, and I like that.”

Freshmen Rin Farrow wants to be more optimistic.

“It’s not that I’m not happy right now because I am. I just want to feel more happy. I want to laugh more, be positive more, and just enjoy life more,” Farrow said.

Not only does Farrow desire a more positive outlook on life, but she also has goals for self improvement.

“I wanted to try harder in school and get along better with my siblings,” Farrow said.

In past years, Farrow has not made goals, but this new year she saw a chance to make a change in her life.

“I’ve never really thought about my New Year’s resolution that much before this year. It was kind of something I just felt this year because of starting high-school,” Farrow said.

Farrow looks more to the future than the past.

“Everyone had issues in 2014, so for 2015 I feel like we will be able to put that behind us. It’s like a new start for everyone,” Farrow said.

Jan. 1, 2015. New Year’s Day. It’s not just the counting of another revolution around the Sun. It’s a time to look to the future, make goals for the future, and wonder about 2015.
