Custodian Ollie Caruthers accepts the donations from the West High community.

With police cars being set on fire, tear gas being thrown and the national media focusing on the unrest in St. Louis, students, alumni and faculty packed the cafeteria during first and second lunches to honor Custodian Ollie Caruthers.

Juniors Emily Wind and Shannon Anderson presented Caruthers with a check for over 33K to help offset medical expenses for him and his ailing wife.  Wind and Anderson initially collected spare change in the cafeteria during lunches during October.

“I hope others in the community feel a glimmer of happiness seeing that there is good in the world,” Building Manager Scott Bollmann said.

Alumni returned to show their support as well.

“It was really special seeing Ollie be celebrated after he has done so much for each of us, every single day, over the past 16 years,” Alumni Annie Spewak said.
