![January 2024 marks over seven decades since the publishing of “The Bell Jar.” In those seven decades, the novel has opened the eyes of countless women to the unfair treatment they’ve faced, particularly being percieved as nothing more than mothers and the consequences that arise from that. “To my knowledge, [“The Bell Jar” was] one of the earliest novels that explores a womans mental health and inner journey and allows her to go through struggles and make mistakes without vilifying [her]. Shes ambitious yet flawed and unsure how to proceed, like [many] women at the beginning of the 1960s. My mom was born in 1950 and grew up hearing that if she wanted to work, she had three choices: nurse, secretary and teacher. It was a brave new world when she found out there were more options. But that also comes with fear and anxiety and the judgment of others. ![“I started [the First Generation Club] because it was really hard to find people who were [a] part of the immigrant community. I didnt share a lot of similar experiences or have a similar background to my non-first-generation peers. Sometimes Id feel distanced or like I didnt belong because of that. I wanted to meet more first-generation students and be with people who connected with my experiences. My parents encouraged me to stay dedicated to my education, and thats one of the main focuses of the club. I wanted to create a space for everyone to come together [at] West, stay dedicated to our studies and have an opportunity to volunteer with friends. One of the challenges we faced in getting this club started was finding opportunities for us to organize school and volunteer[ing] events. Reaching out to people and getting help can really set things up for you. Ive learned a lot about communication through starting this club; the First Generation Club has made me a more vocal person. Having a space to talk to people [with] similar experiences [as] mine is a rewarding aspect [of being a co-founder]. With the fall season in full swing The Improv team is gearing up for the new season with 14 new members.
“I just want to do right by the team and foster a fun environment, but also try to make everyone on this team become better at Improv than they thought they could be,” Huff said.
The three captains for this year are seniors Greg Robson, Doug Browne and Charlie Huff.
“I think the captains were very welcoming and saw the potential in people which I really liked. Overall I think they are really helpful with critique after every scene,” junior Audrey Frost said.
Improv acting is playing acting games and doing scenes without scripts or preparation.
One of the things about improv is you can’t really be certain about anything but as of right now I’m very confident that everyone will do great in the show.

Everyone’s very funny and we are pretty close, but as the year goes on we’ll all improve as improvers and become much closer along the way.
New members include sophomores Bryan Zhang, Kent Robinson, Ann Rapp, Caroline Vogl, juniors Frost, Koel Branson, Kathryn Harter and seniors Nick Jodlowski, Alex Galvin, Hosein Saboorizadeh and Alison Owen.
“I like it but it’s difficult. It’s harder than I expected it to be. But I am enjoying it. As a new member, I don’t really know everyone on the team yet and some scenes are really awkward because I don’t know people that well,” Rapp said.
Frost, balances being on the team with starring in the children’s show, Snow White, as a new member.
“I love the goofy people that run Improv; I love how everyone can laugh at themselves and has a really good sense of humor. I love the club and I am super excited for the first show but it has been a really good experience and I am glad I joined it,” Frost said.
Never having done theatre, Zhang made it on the team as a sophomore.

“I wanted to do something theatre related because my cousin told me to. I think Improv is a great experience that everyone should have. I feel nervous for the upcoming show but I think my team will do the best with a lot of practice and hard work. My team is Kathryn, Greg and Hosein. It’s my first year doing Improv but everyone else on the team seems to be doing really well carrying me. I like everyone there and I hope I’m ready for the first show,” Zhang said.
For the show, members are split into teams of four to five. Throughout the show and during practices, members will work with their teams.
“I love everyone on my team; they are all really funny. My team has Sophie Starr, Charlie and Tashaun,” Owen said.
The theme for the first show is The Breakfast Club. Each individual team has a character from the movie: The Jocks, Princesses, Burnouts, Basket Cases (Weirdos) and the Nerds.
“Tashaun inspired Doug, Greg and I choose the Breakfast Club as a theme for the opening show. I think students should come see the show because it’s not often that you get to see your friends standing in front of them on stage acting like idiots,” Huff said.
The few of the games are “Good, Bad, Worse”, “Superheroes” and “Two Rooms”.
“My favorite game is Good, Bad, Worse because I can make subtle political jokes that people get,” Zhang said.
The first show will take place on Nov. 14. Tickets are five dollars.
“This year our goals are for the team to really have as much fun as they can, to rock all of our performances, have everyone on the team tap into their deepest potential and to make going to Improv shows a fun thing to do for West students in the years to come,” Huff said.
