Ellen DeGeneres sets the bar for upcoming Oscars broadcasts

On March 2, talk show host Ellen DeGeneres created a few “firsts” and broke records for the 2014 broadcast of the Academy Awards in the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Here are the top ten reasons why DeGeneres is the perfect host for not only daytime television, but the Oscars as well.

10. All the way leading up to the Oscars, DeGeneres used the names of famous actors in her tweets to preview the upcoming ceremony.  “The show’s getting (Glenn) Close. I better put on my (Benedict) Cumberbatch and my (Jennifer) Garner belt. Okay, I’m done. #Oscars” DeGeneres sent this tweet out just hours before the program premiered.

9. Usually, the hosts of big award shows address topics formally. However, DeGeneres took a new approach and introduced award presenters in a casual, light manor. Before actor Channing Tatum came out on stage to present an award, DeGeneres addressed him as “an actor who needs no introduction, but if I didn’t give him one, he wouldn’t know when to come out on stage.”

8. Even while hosting the show, DeGeneres kept up with her fan base via social media. She tweeted pictures of her with actors such as Tatum and the winner of best supporting actor in a film, Jared Leto. DeGeneres also used Instagram as a way of communicating her back stage activities to the world. She posted a picture of Academy Award nominee, Jennifer Lawrence, with the caption “A rare photo of Jennifer Lawrence standing up” after she tripped on the red carpet earlier in the night.

7. In the past, actors who have hosted the Oscars have used profanity as a main source of jokes, thinking that these inappropriate gestures appeal to the audience more. Nevertheless, DeGeneres did not stick to this stereotype. Instead, she kept her jokes clean, witty and original. “It has been a tough couple of days for us here. It has been raining. We’re fine. Thank you for your prayers,” DeGeneres joked at the beginning of the show

6. It’s no secret that on her talk show, DeGeneres keeps her audience entertained through her friendly and impromptu mannerisms. The Oscars were no exception to her normal behavior. She often walked around in the audience, stealing actor’s seats and casually talking with them. This approach was very different compared to past hosts that have stuck to staying on the main stage for the duration of the show. Through her spontaneous antics, DeGeneres was able to pull off the feel that she was just  “hanging out” with all of the actors.

5. In Hollywood, strange fashions are no surprise. However, DeGeneres managed to shock the audience when she returned on stage after a commercial break in a “Glinda the good witch” costume, from The Wizard of Oz. This was a light follow-up after the heart-warming tribute to the film’s 75th anniversary that featured a rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” performed by popular singer, Pink

4. Though 2013 Oscar host, Seth MacFarlane, boosted the viewership ratings 2% from 2012, DeGeneres was a large contribution to the not only the 7% raise in viewership since 2013, but the largest viewership of the Academy Awards since the year 2000. After the show, many viewers gave positive feedback to the way DeGeneres addressed the actors: as normal people.

3. During one of DeGeneres’s off-stage sprees, she managed to snag a “selfie” on her phone with decorated actors such as Lupita Nyong’o, Bradley Cooper, Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts and more. This  “selfie” was acknowledged as “the best picture ever taken” all over the Twitter and Instagram atmosphere.

2. Directly after the picture was taken, DeGeneres proceeded to tweet out the picture with the caption “If only Bradley’s arm was longer. Best photo ever. #oscars.” (referring to Cooper who took the “selfie” with all of the actors) This photo then made history. It broke the world record for the most retweets, at a whopping 3.1 million. This tweet literally broke Twitter for a short amount of time, causing the website to crash due to all the activity it promoted.

1. Last, and certainly not least, one of the most talked about things that DeGeneres did was order pizza for the fellow actors in the audience. She called a local pizza place for delivery, and proceeded to bring the delivery man, Edgar, into the audience to hand out the pizza to actors during the show. DeGeneres then joked that she didn’t have any money to pay him, and passed around singer Pharrell’s hat to collect a fund.

Without a doubt, DeGeneres made the 2014 Oscars not only one of the most viewed, but one of the most casual and funny awards show in the history of the Academy Awards as well. Well done, DeGeneres. You’ve created one for the books.
