Golden Globes produce a night filled with fashion hits and misses

The Golden Globe Awards, an internationally broadcasted award show that recognizes achievements in cinema, is also known for displaying another art form as the event kicks off award show season: fashion. The 2014 Golden Globes held in Los Angeles on Jan. 12 were no different. While many of the nights big names and nominees disappointed with their choice of attire, presenters and new faces to the big screen impressed.   Here is my account of the fatally bad and pleasingly good fashion choices made on one of Hollywood’s biggest nights.

Best Dressed: Presenter and cast member of the Best Motion Picture: Musical or Comedy nominee The Wolf of Wall Street, Australian actress Margot Robbie stunned in a fitted white Gucci gown. The Gucci gown had emerald green embellishments and a high slit, the perfect combination to match her emerald green heels that peeked from the bottom.  Simple yet elegant, Robbie stole the spotlight away from nominees and veterans of cinema alike.

A new actress and one of Vogue’s ten rising style stars of 2014, Lupita Nyong’o, a nominee for her performance in 12 Years a Slave, went simple with a red-orange Ralph Lauren dress. The dress was all one color but also included a cape. Nyong’o’s dark skin tone was perfectly complimented by the color, and the cape allowed for this newbie to stand out in her own fashion forward way on the carpet.

A returning guest and nominee for her role in the hit television show Modern Family, Sofia Vergara had the perfect combination of elegant and fun in a Zac Posen designed gown and a light blue statement necklace. The combo of the all black, sleek dress with a right pop of color on her tan skin made Vergara shine.

Not a nominee but one of the nights presenters, Olivia Wilde showed off her growing baby bump in a sparkly, emerald green Gucci Premiere dress. The sequined look of the emerald draped fittingly over her figure and created just the right amount of simplistic and fun fashion. From nominees to presenters, these fresh faces exemplified why the Golden Globes are considered one of the classiest nights in fashion.

Worst Dressed: Topping my list for the worst dressed of the night is Lena Dunham, one of the nominees for Best Actress in a TV Series: Musical or Comedy for her role in Girls.  Dunham wore a canary yellow Zac Posen gown that included an unfortunate combination of not enough fabric at the top yet too much on the bottom. The tight top and extra canary fabric that swept the floor made the nominee one of the worst dressed of the night.

Also making that list was presenter Zoe Saldana in a dress by Prabal Gurung. The Gurung dress featured a mixed array of fabrics and embellishments that caused confusion in her red carpet look. This usually well-styled star disappointed.

Adding to the list, Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams both won Golden Globes for their roles in the movie American Hustle; however, they lost when it came to making a positive fashion statement. Lawrence chose a white Dior dress with three black belted sections, almost creating the look of a three-tiered wedding cake. For a young star, this dress was far too frumpy and boring. The Valentino designed dress worn by Amy Adams was gorgeous; however, the two-toned red in the dress did not compliment her already red hair. Although these actresses may have stunned in their performances this year, they did not stun on the red carpet.
