Earlier in the semester the Pathfinder published a feature story about Community Outreach at West (COW) aiding the seven-year-old Superman Sam in his fight against acute myeloid leukemia. Today we learned that Sam’s days are numbered. Feeling powerless, I decided to write about what we, no matter if we know Sam or not, can take from his life.

Although Sam has acute myeloid leukemia he has made the most of every day. On his Mother’s blog detailing his progress, Sam is shown meeting people and having fun while he feels well. Sam does not let his disease get in the way of living life.

Sam told his mother that before he dies he wants to: record himself reading a book for his brother, design a t-shirt for charity and write notes to leave around the house for his siblings to find.  He also wants to write a book. Although he may not accomplish these goals, Sam hasn’t given up. By living in the moment, Sam is truly an inspiration to all.

In today’s busy world, I think we can all benefit from slowing down and evaluating our actions. Stressing about the holiday season and final exams isn’t going to change the outcome. Instead, It we need to reflect on what we do have:  our health, family and friends.

Even though you may be worried about the holidays or final exams, take the time to remember what really matters in the grand scheme of things.  No matter how small you may feel you are; you, like Sam, can make a difference in the world.
