Drumming up donations

On Friday, Sept. 20, students will be participating in drum circles before school and during lunch. The drum circles are a part of an international day of music and celebration associated with the Playing for Change foundation.

“Students will have the ability to participate in the drum circle for a small donation that will promote the cause,” Senior Principal Terry Martinez said.

The Playing for Change Foundation is creating positive change around the world by developing music and arts education in needy areas. The third annual Playing for Change Day is officially Saturday, Sept. 21, and will be celebrated in concerts internationally.

The West High event is sponsored by Ben Pyatt, West High’s marching band director, and Lara Boles, a social studies teacher.

“Students are getting involved with class projects directed by [Mr. Pyatt and I]. Hopefully they are feeling inspired also that this cause and this organization can make a positive difference in the world. Plus, it is always fun to play drums and wear tie-dye shirts,” Boles said.

Students are encouraged to wear tie-dye shirts to school in support of the events. A drum circle will take place from 7:15-7:30 a.m. at the flagpole. During both lunches, students will be encouraged to join the drum circle on the cafeteria patio for a donation to the Playing for Change Foundation.

“It’s a way to help little kids in Africa, to fund a music program. After all, I’m in band, and I really enjoy music,” sophomore Victoria West-Staples said.

Donations will be accepted throughout the day.

“We hope this event will raise awareness of the Playing for Change foundation, build community at West High and become an annual tradition of supporting positive social change and international peace through music,” Boles said.
