Women of West (WOW) held their second meeting Wednesday, Sept. 11 in sponsor Erica Roger’s classroom. They discussed plans for upcoming community service projects and meetings.

The Executive Board officers began the meeting by discussing “Defense Week”.

“Defense Week will combine a morning meeting discussion, an afternoon defense lesson, and a weekend volunteering at Lydia’s House,” senior Executive Board officer Sarah Verhulst said.

Lydia’s House provides transitional housing for women and children that have been domestically abused.  Verhulst brought the idea to members after learning a family member of hers once resided there.

“I think I’ll learn about the signs these people missed before they were abused, like when everything seemed to be going good.  I want to help with Lydia’s House because I think the idea of what they do is cool,” junior WOW member Njeri Macharia said.

After over 50 students attended the first meeting, the WOW officers were inspired to give all members the opportunity to get involved.

“We hope to maintain the high level of energy and interest from all the girls.  We’re hoping that by making WOW more visible to West High, we will attract more members and increase our activity,” sponsor Erica Rogers said.

As the members, Executive Board officers and sponsors make headway in planning, their goal remains to impact women.

“I think that this year will be a powerful one at Women of West. I know WOW has always been an amazing and lovely club, but I think the officers are stepping it up for our final year (three of the officers are seniors) of Women of West. We want to have a kicking year just like our members, and I think we will accomplish it with this super organized planning,” Verhulst said.
