Baseball preview: new traditions

After three different head coaches in three seasons, West Middle School Physical Education teacher Tony McNabb steps into the role as head coach of the Baseball team.  The assistant coach is Ben Margalski, and hitting coach is Jeff Rogers from Rockwood Summit will also join the teams coaching staff.

“Coach McNabb has a great passion for the game of baseball and works well with kids which makes him the right man for the job,” Athletic Director Brian Kessler said

“We have a good mix of younger and older guys. It will most likely be an up and down season. The team needs accountability, a strong work ethic and determination to restore the pride in West baseball,” Margalski said.

The team consists of 10 seniors who look to provide experience for the program.

“As a senior, my job is to be a good role model on and off the field by the way I carry myself. I need to help advocate the traditions of west baseball so we can hopefully build a successful program for the future,” senior 3B/Pitcher Jake Hughes said.

Senior right fielder Clifford Chi plans to continue his career at Washington University. He is a member of the St. Louis Gamers, a premiere club team in the area.

“I plan on playing at either Washington University, or DePauw University in Indiana. I plan on having all my focus on the team this year as a leader, I hope to lead by example for the younger players in the program,” Chi said.

“The program has accepted and helped us transition into high school baseball. It is our job to rejuvenate the program and we can’t do that without the help of the varsity team, who has supported us in many ways,” freshman Andrew Schmidt said.

The Longhorns first game is against Parkway South on March 22.

What do you like about The Pathfinder? What I like about The Pathfinder is the variety of stories that are covered by the staff.

How would you describe yourself? I am an easy-going, friendly guy who is an avid sports lover.

Favorite Quote: “I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” - Michael Jordan

Where do you want to go to college? I hope to play baseball at Coastal Carolina.
