Doing the best at Dewey’s

Kyla’s Kitchen

After trying to eat healthily for the upcoming lacrosse season, Emma and I decided it was time to reward ourselves with a trip to Dewey’s Pizza, a sit-down restaurant right at the corner of Clarkson and Clayton.

We thought we should at least attempt to continue the good eating habits with a salad to start off, so we ordered the Peppercorn Ranch salad. The little diced tomatoes and strips of red onions could have tipped the scales in the healthy direction, but the amount of peppercorn ranch dressing on the salad made all healthy hopes disappear. However, it was still an amazing starter with big leafs of romaine lettuce and savory bits of bacon perfectly mixed in with the tomatoes and red onions. To top it all off, there was shredded Parmesan cheese and sprinkled with pepper. Splitting the smaller size was definitely a good choice because it was surprisingly filling, and if

we had opted for the bigger portion, there would have been less room for the pizza that was to come.

I had only been to Dewey’s once or twice before, and I had never really looked at the options before this time. Since this is one of Emma’s favorite places, I trusted her judgment when she said that the Meatball pizza is the best one to get, and she was right. It’s really only two major ingredients, cheese and meatballs, but it’s the smaller aspects, like the fresh and fragrant basil that is cooked into the delectable red sauce, and the combination of melted mozzarella and parmesan cheese that comes with each bite that really push this pizza over the top. Dewey’s proved that they have the ability to make every component of the pizza stand out, but still blend well together to create an overall delicious flavor profile.

As good as that was, because Emma and I like a little bit of variety, we split the pizza order in half and went for the “Create Your Own” option for the other side. On the second half, we came up with the mixture of mushrooms, sliced pepperoni and small circles of Italian sausage. Once it was put all together with a base of the same red sauce as the other half, we had two different pizzas that were amazing in their own ways. The crusts were buttery and fluffy on every slice of pizza and the ratio of sauce to cheese to toppings was almost always perfect. I alternated between the two types of pizza and each bite became just a slightly different, and somehow better, variation than the last.

With a friendly family atmosphere, attentive servers and seats to watch the workers make the pizzas through big windows looking in on the kitchen, Dewey’s is the ideal restaurant for good conversation over even better pizza.

Emma’s Eats

After craving pizza for days, I decided that Kyla and I needed to go to my personal favor

ite pizza place, Dewey’s Pizza. Dewey’s is conveniently located at the intersection of Clarkson and Clayton so not only is it extremely delicious, but also very close.

We started our meal by splitting a regular sized Peppercorn Ranch salad which was more than enough because Kyla and I still had some left over after we had each eaten our fair share.  This was an in an attempt to stay semi-healthy, but was quickly thwarted by the fact that it was drenched in peppercorn ranch and topped with a mountain of parmesan cheese.  This only added to its deliciousness, however, because the pepper in the ranch contrasted wonderfully with the sweet diced tomatoes and the crisp red onions. I’ve also tried their House salad, which I thought was also excellent because I’m a big fan of goat cheese, so the Peppercorn Ranch definitely rivals it.

Next, our pizza came out. The pizza we got was only an 11 inch, but it was just the right amount with the salad because Kyla and I were full at the end with no regrets. We decided that in order to expand our flavor palette, we would split the pizza.  As I stated before, Dewey’s is one of my favorite spots for pizza so I already knew what I wanted going into the dinner. “The Meatball” is by far the best pizza there because it combines two great Italian components. The pizza is actually rather simple, it just features mozzarella cheese and handmade meatballs, all over their classic red sauce.  Since Italian is my favorite type of food, this pizza is delightful. The slightly seasoned meatball pairs nicely with the gooey mozzarella and the sweet red sauce along with the hints of basil and oregano.

The second half of our already amazing pizza consisted of a combination that Kyla and I came up with ourselves for the “Create Your Own” option.  It consisted of spicy Italian sausage, fresh pepperoni, and mixed mushrooms. Now I’m not a huge fan of mushrooms, but this did not hinder the overall flavor of the pizza because the sweetness of the tomato sauce paired well with the spicy sausage and pepperoni and the mushrooms added a nice toned down flavor as well.  However, the toppings are only part of what makes this pizza so great.  A large portion of it can be contributed to the crust. The pizza lays on the perfect combination of a chewy and soft crust, which is hard to achieve without it being soggy or thin. However, this is the certain quality of Dewey’s Pizza that takes it to the next level above other pizza places.

Finally, the staff was very friendly and gave us ample time to decide what we wanted.  I would highly recommend Dewey’s Pizza if you’re in the area because it easily surpasses other nearby pizza places and chains.
