The whole cast sits awaiting the right time to go on stage. Students who have loved being on stage have enjoyed their experience with their fellow cast members. “I auditioned because i love theater and i thought a dramatic play would be a good change from the usual comedy.” junior Kathryn Harter said.

“Our Town,” a three-act play by Thornton Wilder, opens tonight at 7 p.m., featuring a cast of 35 characters, set in the fictional town of Grover’s Corners between 1901 and 1913.

“I love how different we are. My character, Mrs. Webb is very straight laced and I adore her confidence. She is also a very loving mother under her rougher surface and I have enjoyed developing her character. I’ve never had a role like this one and it was a good challenge for me,” junior Kathryn Harter said.

Harter plays the role of Myrtle Webb. This character is the wife of Charles Webb, played by senior Noah Bozue, who works as the editor of the Grover’s Corner Sentinel.

“It’s really cool to get to know some of the freshmen who are in the plays for the first time,” Bozue said. “Rehearsals can be pretty boring sometimes but doing them with your friends is much more fun.”

“Our Town” was first performed on Jan. 22, 1938 at the McCarter Theater in Princeton, New Jersey. The play later moved on to Broadway and won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

During rehearsal senior Alex Galvin and junior Cameron Pille sit silently acting as their characters who have pasted away. They have been rehearsing their lines for weeks in preparation for opening night. "I think everyone knows it'll all work out since we've made so much progress." Pille said.

“We were originally going to do the play ‘Much Ado About Nothing,’ but instead we decided to do one without a set. So, we chose ‘Our Town’ because it has a big cast and a good message,” Drama teacher Amie Gossett said.

Since the play does not have a set, the actors mime their actions.

“My biggest concern for opening night is basically all of act three because it’s much more complex and all the actors have to do quick changes,” Harter said.

The play has no set, no scenery and no props. The surroundings are only created with tables and chairs.

“This play is definitely something everyone should see at least once in their life,” Gossett said.

The performances are Friday, Feb. 20 and 21 at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. in the West High Theater.  Tickets are $5.
