Feb. 2 marks the 30 annual Senior vs. Faculty Basketball game. The seniors will strive to end the teachers’ two-year winning streak.
This year, members of the Drug Free Council and Captains’ Council decided to join in with other schools and participate in the “Coaches vs. Cancer” fundraiser. Parkway is teaming up with districts around the city, such as the Kirkwood School District and Priory High School, to grant 14 wishes through the Make-A-Wish in a program they call “Kids for Wish Kids.”
“As a school, we’re trying to raise $5,000 to grant one wish,” senior and Parkway West ambassador to the Make-A-Wish Foundation Catharine Conway said.
The donations went through another St. Louis based organization called “Friends of Kids with Cancer.” All donations made from selling the gold rally towels, shoelaces, and bracelets will go toward the fundraiser. Proceeds at the door and at concessions during the Senior-Faculty game will go toward the training room and materials for injuries.
In an attempt to increase the amount of money the school raised, Social Studies teacher Annie Wayland and Physical Education and Health teacher Ryan Pietsch challenged seniors Cash McCurdy and Sarah Gibbs on which group, seniors or teachers, can raise more money by the Senior-Faculty game.
“Whoever raises the most money gets five points added to their score at halftime, while the losers get a pie in the face,” Gibbs said. “All the profits go toward ‘Friends of Kids with Cancer.’”
So come out this Saturday at 7:00 pm and watch the seniors clinch the win against the faculty! Show your support for the fight against childhood cancer and donate to the (senior) bucket before halftime.
